The hill range "Les Gavarres" is situated between Girona city and the Costa Brava. It is almost entirely covered with forest.
You will find here one of the most valuable samples of cork oaks and pines of the country, as well as rare species of Mediterranean flora and fauna. It is for this reason that in 1992 almost 29 000ha of Les Gavarres have been declared PEIN, a protected area.
The Costa Brava starts where the river Tordera flows into the sea at Blanes and finishes at the french border, this adding together more then 200km of cost line.
The name "Costa Brava" was first used in an article by Ferrán Agulló in "La Veu de Catalunya" in september 1907 and made reference to its rugged landscape, full of rocks.
On this strip of coast you will find the Islas Medas (the islands of Medas) where you can enjoy different activities like diving or underwater sightseeing by ship.
The church
On the north and south walls of the church of Sant Mateu de Montnegre you can appreciate the remainders of a first builing constructed at the beginning of XI in romanic style and which consisted of just one nave. It was the Lord of Cevià, Sunyer de Llobet, who gave in 1022 a sum in gold to the building site of the church.
Ever since Sant Mateu has been changed in various occasions, like in 1329 when the bell tower needed restoring work. In 1329 the church had three altars: one for Saint Mathew, one for Saint Jones and one for Saint Anthon and the Holly Cross. The lateral chapels date from XVI, XVII and XVIII. The last restauring works were done in 2002.
The parroquial therm
The name Montnegre is mentioned for the first time in the year 943 and 998: Montenigro is then a late medieval set and its name referrs to the dark colour of the leaves of the most common trees of the area: the stone and cork oak. The parish Sancti Mathei de Montenigro dates from around 1059. The ringing of the bells brought the parishers together for the services and also to pay taxes and help the poorest with baked bread.
Close by Mas Vinyoles you will find different historical monuments.
